Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Spotted Testing at Nurburgring

The three-pointed star marque is in the process of streamlining its key offerings. In this regard, it is axing the coupe and convertible variants of the C-Class and E-Class to give way to the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLE. The new range will also feature a high-performance version, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, which happens to be the subject of the new spy video here.

The Spied Mercedes-AMG CLE 63

The body of the prototype in the video provided by CarSpyMedia on YouTube is fully covered in zebra-patterned camouflage. However, its form, resembling that of the phased-out C-Class Coupe, heavily hints at its CLE identity. Meanwhile, the crossed grille pattern is obviously hiding a Panamericana grille with vertical slats, which is the signature feature of AMG models. With these things in consideration, we’re positive that this is the AMG CLE, and possibly the 63 trim of the model.

The video only shows the hardtop variant of the car, but it should be noted that a convertible version of it is in the works. There are also spy shots in the past few months confirming this topdown model of the series.

Interestingly, the V8 roar that we’re all too familiar with is lacking in the tire-squealing AMG CLE shown in the video. With this, it is widely believed that the CLE will share its underpinnings and technology with the C-Class, including its electrified 2.0-liter powertrain.

The Electrified Powertrain of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63

The AMG CLE 63 will likely feature an electrified powertrain with a turbocharged four-pot petrol-fed engine partnered with an electric motor. This mild-hybrid setup is expected to deliver a combined output of 671 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque if it follows the same configuration found in the AMG C63.

The AMG C63 model has already been tested with this configuration, and it can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in just around 3.3 seconds. The same acceleration time can also be expected for the CLE coupe and convertible.

Expected Arrival of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63

While we’ve seen quite a few prototypes of the CLE testing on different locations, the regular Benz models are expected to make their debut later this year. The AMG-branded version is not expected to make it within the year though.

The most viable market rollout of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 is early next year.
