Let the midsize truck wars begin! The new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are just now hitting the streets, and the 2024 Toyota Tacoma will be revealed on May 19. But today, we finally get a look at new 2024 Ford Ranger.

2024 Ford Ranger debuts with Raptor model, more powertrain options

The big news is that an off-road ready Ranger variant, the Raptor, finally comes to the United States. It joins a robust Raptor family that already includes the F-150 Raptor, F-150 Raptor R and Bronco Raptor. The Ranger Raptor is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter “EcoBoost” V-6, the same engine found in the Bronco Raptor.  The V6 delivers 405 horsepower and a husky 430 pound-feet of torque.

Designed for desert dunes, the Raptor’s beefy suspension includes a Watt’s link rear suspension, 2.5-inch Fox Live Valve shocks, a new electronically controlled, two-speed transfer case, front-and-rear locking differentials, high-strength steel bash plates, and 33-inch BFGoodrich KO3 all-terrain tires.

More big news: The standard Ranger gets a new engine option. Ranger’s base—and previously only—engine remains an EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbocharged four. Newly available is a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 (also part of the EcoBoost family). The V6 produces 315 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity for the 2024 Ford Ranger is 7,500 pounds (the same as the 2023 model), with a max payload of 1,805 pounds (55 pounds less than the 2023 model).

In addition to a complete redesign, which includes a lot of F-150 styling cues and a more refined interior, the 2024 Ranger will get a number of new and useful features. Inside the cabin, you’ll see things such as a large center console storage bin, an available upper glove box, improved under-seat cargo bins in the second row, and fold-flat second-row seats for stowing things like coolers. Outside, the new Ranger gets available integrated bed steps, a 400-Watt power inverter with a 110-volt outlet, and a tailgate that doubles as a work bench.

The Ranger’s tech game has also been updated. In addition to Ford’s Sync 4A infotainment system, you’ll get a standard embedded 4G LTE modem, an 8-inch digital instrument panel, and a 10.1-inch center touchscreen. A 12.4-inch instrument panel and 12-inch center screen are available. Other available tech features include a wireless charger, 360-degree camera, Zone Lighting, and a fully automated park assist system to help with both parallel and perpendicular parking.

In the safety department, the 2024 Ranger includes 31 standard or available driver-assist features. Included are such systems as blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage and adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability. Another cool safety feature that doesn’t currently exist in the midsize truck segment: Trailer Reverse Guidance. This system uses cameras to show turn angles and monitor conditions surrounding the truck and trailer, as well as provide real-time trailer-handling coaching.

The Ranger will continue with its primary trims–XL, XLT and Lariat–in addition to the Raptor. The new Ford Ranger will start at $34,160, and Ranger Raptor at $56,960, including $1,595 for destination and delivery. The Build and Price website is expected to be available in the coming weeks.

Both the 2024 Ranger and Ranger Raptor will be assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, with orders beginning at the end of May 2023. The base-engine Ranger and Raptor models will be available late summer, with the 2.7-liter models coming online in late fall.
